Stages in the making of a barrel PDF

Some of the stages in the making of a barrel

Selection of the wood right from its origin (cooperage wood) must always go through the best screening: straight-fibre wood, lack of breaking veins and cavities, little whiteness, tight hoops...
Tonelería Duero works with origin-certified French, American and Centre-European oak-wood. Oak wood is unique, hard, rich in elegant smells and complex tastes. Trees are cut only when they are over 100 years old.

Tonelería Duero can trust its wood providers, specialist in oak, who pick only from the best wood rigorously. The expertise of these specialists takes them to the best forests in order to select only the best trees, meeting the highest quality demands which Tonelería Duero requires, and which will be recorded and registered on the company’s database.

Tonelería Duero has a wood park where the logs can be stored to become staves in order to later become wine barrels, after its ageing process  naturally aged by weather. This process can take up to 24-30 months depending on the thickness of the wood. All this time, the action of the sun, the rain and the wind purges the wood of the harsher tannines, makes it lose a great amount of wet and enriches its smells. And should it be neccesary, watering it sometimes. This traditional technique of ageing through exposure to the elements is the only one which guarantees great wines to develop its full potential during the whole stay in the barrel.
